REDESIGNING THE ELDERLY PICTOGRAM
Graphic revision of the pictogram representing the elderly in Brazil. In 2022, the National Traffic Council issued a resolution for the use of the new symbol on signs designated for parking spaces exclusively for individuals over sixty. Download the icon here.
THERE IS NO CITIZENSHIP WITHOUT INFORMATION. AND THERE IS NO INFORMATION WITHOUT DESIGN.
The image that needed updating depicted a person with significant mobility impairment. Above are some examples of the old symbol used to indicate priority for the elderly. Below are the initial sketches and digital graphic studies carried out between 2012 and 2013. The project received academic guidance from Sandra Souza (USP – State University of São Paulo).
Using iconographic research as a basis, alternatives were developed for the symbol representing individuals over sixty. The technical design was based on the graphic standards of ABNT – Brazilian Association of Technical Standards. Below are the front and side views of the human figure adopted by ABNT.
Now, instead of depicting a person with a cane and a curved spine, the new figure features an upright stance, with the number 60+ alongside.
The symbol and its variations are being used in airports and shopping centers throughout Brazil to indicate parking spots, queues, and preferred seating for individuals over the age of sixty. The icon portrays someone who has surpassed sixty years and is still in motion, evoking notions of lived experience, life wisdom, and prosperity.
